SAGE is the country's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, provides education and technical assistance for aging providers and LGBT organizations through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, and cultural competence training through SAGECare. With offices in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Chicago, SAGE coordinates a growing network of 28 SAGE affiliates in 21 states and the District of Columbia.

Summary:

The primary purpose of the SAGEVets Program is to help LGBT Veterans in NYS, age 50 and over, access VA benefits.  Particular barriers or areas of concern include discharge upgrades, service-connected disability benefits and spousal benefits, especially around same-sex spouses.  To this end, SAGEVets works closely with the VA’s across the state as well as legal partners, such as Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) and New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG).

This full-time position is responsible for making and maintaining close communication and collaboration with these partners, and for making referrals to them.  This position is additionally responsible for all activities of the SAGEVets Program, including outreach, presentation, networking, program production, intake, case management and referral, and is an integral part of the Care Management team.

This position requires a self-starter with significant outreach and people skills as well as organizational skills, to create and build relationships, create systems and meet the program’s deliverables. Case management and program production experience are required as well.  Someone with a knowledge of aging, LGBT communities and VA systems strongly desired.  Strong preference for a veteran of US military service for filling this position.  This position must take responsibility for learning about the history and experiences of older LGBT people in the military and for incorporating that information into programs and presentations.  This position requires much local travel and some travel around the state. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Creating and implementing an outreach plan in NYC and NYS to reach as many LGBT vets over age 50 as possible
  • Creating systems for tracking contacts and outreach efforts
  • Presenting about SAGEVets to various audiences, including seniors, vets, service providers and LGBT communities
  • Meeting with providers, elected officials and other potential community partners to educate them about SAGEVets, and find ways to collaborate to get the word out, and produce programs
  • Performing intakes and case management duties for vets and making internal referrals, as well as referrals to VA’s, legal partners and other veteran service providers in the state
  • Promoting and celebrating the military service experience of LGBT older vets
  • Working in partnership with internal and external partners to create programs for older LGBT vets or opportunities where educating about the SAGEVets Program can take place, and the military contributions of older LGBT vets can be celebrated and acknowledged
  • Bi-weekly reporting about program activities and other reporting as needed on the progress of the SAGEVets program
  • Creating fliers and other materials for SAGEVets programs
  • Maintaining contact with and organizing program activity information from the SAGEVets program at the SAGE affiliate in Rochester, which is part of the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley
  • Participating in Care Management meetings and working as part of the Care Management team to meet the needs of individuals in the program
  • Other duties as requested

Qualifications:

  • BA or BSW required or comparable work experience
  • LGBT veteran of active US military service required
  • Experience doing outreach
  • Experience doing case management
  • Experience working with older adults
  • Knowledge and/or experience working in LGBT communities
  • Knowledge of US military service, history and/or VA systems
  • Computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, data entry, etc.)
  • Networking & presentation skills

Special Requirements:

  • Significant local travel via public transportation around NYC
  • Travel to locations around New York State, with overnight stays sometimes required
  • Irregular hours, with some evening and weekend required with advance notice, particularly during Gay Pride season and leading up to Veterans’ Day, but there could be other times as well.
  • Ability to work independently and to create and keep own schedule, and record and track work accurately
