Queer researchers are conducting a study on power, control, and unhealthy relationship dynamics among LGB+ individuals. These dynamics are generally assessed via standardized scales, which were developed on and for cis-het populations. Using these existing measures in LGB+ communities does help focus our attention on the issue. However, the use of these scales may narrow our attention to certain types of control and abuse—most common in heterosexual relationships—and we risk reproducing a heteronormative understanding of victimization and perpetration. This leaves the actual experiences of our community invisible and ignored. This research project aims to address the need for a more nuanced understanding of the lived experience of the LGB+ community.
