January's Hudson Valley Queer and Trans Outdoors hike will be...
Melzingah Reservoir Loop
Beacon, NY
Saturday, Jan 5th, 2019
10:30 AM
GPS: 196 Breakneck Rd, Beacon, NY 12508
"Let's start the new year off with a winter favorite - the beautiful Melzingah Reservoir Loop! We'll start on the Blue Notch trail off of 9D in Beacon, walk through sparkly winter forest over several brooks, then pop onto the Yellow trail before looping down past the glorious Melzingah Reservoir. We might shorten the loop though depending on the weather and trail conditions.
Difficulty: This trail has a very gentle grade, with no big climbs, just flat terrain with some small rolling hills. However, it can get icy this time of year so footing can be difficult. There are some wet spots too, so please wear waterproof footwear. You don't need spikes or special hiking boots to do it though - regular snow boots work fine. If the trail is too icy, we'll just do the first half of the loop, to avoid the wetter second half. As always, please let us know if you have any questions about what the trail is like.
Directions: Set your GPS to 196 Breakneck Rd, Beacon, NY 12508. You'll see room for 3-4 cars in front of a post with blue trail markers that says "Notch Trail", as well as another small pull off across the street with room for another 3-4 cars. The post with the trail markers on it will be on the left hand side if you're driving south, or the right if you're driving north.
Distance: ~3.5 miles, 2.5 hours
You can follow us on Facebook and Instagram (@hvqueeroutdoors) for any trip updates. We'll also send a weather report closer to the date.
Please RSVP, and email with any questions!
Hope to see you on Jan 5th, and Happy New Year in the meantime!"
