Briarcliff Manor Public Library

Human Library “Books” needed

The Briarcliff Manor Public Library is seeking adult volunteers who have firsthand experience with prejudice, discrimination, or stigma due to a difference and who are willing to share their story. The volunteers will engage in three 30-minute, one-on-one conversations at the Briarcliff Library with participants who want to learn more about the volunteers' experience with discrimination.

Volunteers must complete a two-hour Zoom training with the Human Library a month or so before their conversations.

Human Library is a 19-year-old organization based in Copenhagen that provides a learning platform for people who experience prejudice to have a conversation with another person.. Library terminology is used: "books" share the stories, and readers check the "books" out to talk with them. The books have titles which reflect how society sees them. Research shows that participation builds empathy and the understanding that to overcome prejudice requires not just awareness, but action
