STUDY: LGBTQ+ Older Adults, Social Isolation, Loneliness, Medication Adherence, and Comfort with Technology: A Pilot Study with Digital Health Devices and Companion Apps

We are recruiting LGBTQ+ older adults who live alone and are not tech savvy for this study.
Here is an overview of the study:

We are conducting a study titled “LGBTQ+ Older Adults, Social Isolation, Loneliness,
Medication Adherence, and Comfort with Technology: A Pilot Study with Digital Health device
and Companion App ” and hope you may know someone interested in participating. As social
work educators we are interested in increasing our knowledge about the use of technology to
promote social connectedness, reduce isolation and loneliness, and improve medication
adherence. We are also interested in learning how social determinants of health may impact the
lives of older adults. All participants will receive a $25 gift card after the first interview and a
$50 gift card after the second interview nine months later. In addition, all participants will be
eligible after completing the second interview to win one of five $100 gift cards.
We are seeking adults aged 60 and older who identify as someone within the LGBTQ+
community and live alone.

Additional criteria:

● Their home must have access to the internet.

● They cannot have received a diagnosis of any kind of dementia (including Alzheimer’s
disease).

● They must have a low comfort level with technology and limited use of technology.

We will ask them some questions by phone first to make sure they meet all the criteria for this
study. If they are eligible and are interested, we will schedule an appointment for our first
interview with them. The time for each of the two interviews will vary but we anticipate they
may each be 60 minutes (one hour) long based on their responses. Please note, their
participation is completely voluntary, and they can choose what they want to say, decline
answering any question, and/or stop the interview at any time. The interviews will be held in-
person. Due to the researcher’s locations, they must reside in New Jersey (or within the greater
tri-state area) or within the area of western and central New York.

If you know someone who has potential interest in participating, please have them contact one or
both of us:

Cory Cummings, PhD, LCSW, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Work, Nazareth
University, [email protected], (585)389-6921.
Jeanne M. Koller, PhD, LCSW, Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, Monmouth
